Film lamination for top value
When folding boxes, book covers or other print products, and above all packaging materials, are expected to provide special highlights with regard to quality and appeal, they undergo extensive finishing processes. This can be achieved by a huge variety of processes that achieve the this appeal, guaranteeing added value. Lamination with high gloss or matt films is an established and effective technology which results in an appearance of highest quality of the printed surface. This lamination can, however, only achieve the expected result if several factors are observed.
The application method used, the bonding partners, and also the adhesive, are all crucial for the quality of the bond, and therefore also for the final impression and value effect of the final print product. In the past, finishing was for many years carried out with systems containing solvents as standard method. As consequence of increasing demands on the environmental compatibility of production methods and on the recycling characteristics of the products, the graphics industry also had to revise its position. Alternative systems became obligatory which permit lamination without solvents. In close cooperation with the engineering companies and processors, Jowat has developed a complete range of water-based dispersion adhesives over the past years, that is constantly optimised.
The table on the right shows some representative examples from this product range. The new generation of the product group Jowacoll® 764.XX reflects this systematic optimisation in some special properties, like foaming, cutting stability, consumption amounts, degree of gloss, and resistance to downline stress factors – like embossing, grooving, or burning of the fold. When a modern foil laminating adhesive is chosen, the selection must be appropriate for the type of machine in use respectively for the application method, and also has to match the specific requirements of the processor (degree of gloss, compound and cutting strength, as well as performance during scoring and embossing etc.).
In Western Europe, the most widely used process it the wet “dried“ application on machines by Billhöfer, EcoSystem, Steinemann, Paperplast and others.Two application technologies have become standard: The first is a system containing a metering device and roller applicator, the second the dual roller unit, consisting of a roller with dosage device and scraper blade plus an applicator roller. The second method has become increasingly established over the past years.
Jowat has responded to this by developing the products Jowacoll® 764.40 and 764.41 which exhibit a high shear stability with minimal formation of particles. Before any downline finishing steps of the laminated sheets take place, these should ideally go into intermediate storage for 24 to 36 hours, which ensures the development of an adequate compound strength. The reactive water-emulsifiable crosslinkers Jowat® 195.70 and Jowat® 195.74 can be added to the products Jowacoll® 764.23, 764.40, 764.41 and 764.26 if necessary, in an amount of approximately three to five percent by weight. Adding the crosslinker is mainly required for superior bond strength values, possibly required for printing inks, or substrates on which adhesion is difficult, for instance with low surface tension or in cases where the materials undergo subsequent deep and wide embossing processes.
For packaging applications with possible food contact, the two-component system Jowacoll® 764.59 with crosslinker Jowat® 195.79 is available. Both products meet the requirements according to food contact regulations, which can be confirmed upon request. The dosage and addition of the crosslinking component is made on site by the applicator. Usually, the dwell time for the adhesive to build up compound strength before downline processing steps is reduced by 8 to 24 hours when a crosslinker is used. The lines by Eurobond, Autobond and Planaplastica are also operating with the “wet direct“ process. Jowacoll® 746.20 was especially developed for these machines, which are not designed for high-speed applications. The product portfolio for film lamination offers a range of optimum adhesives for all standard application methods and quality demands.
