Jowat Adhesives for Safer Workplaces

By choosing our adhesives, which have a lower content of monomeric isocyanates or solvents, you are making your contribution to employee protection and health in the sense of the substitution requirement.

Adhesives for Occupational Safety: Part of Our Green Adhesives

Sustainability is diverse. The commitment to increased employee protection distinguishes a company that acts sustainably and responsibly. By using selected adhesives from Jowat Green Adhesives, you as an employer make an important contribution to occupational safety and at the same time optimize your processes:

  • Since the beginning of the 2000s, Jowat has been successfully developing alternative manufacturing technologies for PUR hot melt adhesives that do not require GHS labelling. These monomer-reduced (MR) products with a minimized content of diisocyanate monomers can be processed without harmful substances in many production areas. Users are protected and adhesive applications are made possible without additional training for employees.
  • The Jowatac® product family is characterized by a high proportion of solids and thus a low solvent content. This not only results in a reduced emission tax, but also a lower risk of fire.

Monomer-reduced Adhesives

What are monomer-reduced adhesives?

Most reactive hot melt adhesives contain isocyanates, which are necessary for the crosslinking reaction and at the same time significantly determine the outstanding adhesive properties of these adhesives. These isocyanates are both polymer-bound and in monomeric form as methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, or MDI for short (CAS No. 101-68-8).
Isocyanates have an irritating effect on the skin, mucous membranes, eyes and respiratory tract, depending on the concentration, but can also trigger allergies. For this reason, adhesive formulations with a proportion of monomeric MDI> 0.1% must be labelled with the GHS symbol 08 (health hazard) according to the currently valid rules for hazardous substance labelling (GHS). The proportion of monomeric MDI contained in MR adhesives is below 0.1%. According to the current EU regulation (EU1272 / 2008 and the associated amending regulation EU790 / 2009), there is no need to label it as a hazardous substance. Users of MR adhesives are also not affected by the mandatory training announced for 2023 – so a change is twice as worthwhile.

The advantages of monomer-reduced adhesives

With the switch to monomer-reduced adhesives, companies are killing two birds with one stone: In addition to improved occupational safety, the training obligation announced for conventional reactive hot melt adhesives is also a good reason for the change.

  • No GHS hazardous substance labeling
  • No P and H phrases required
  • Improved user protection
  • No compulsory training for the process chain

Solvent-reduced Adhesives

What are low-solvent adhesives?

Depending on the country and region, emissions of solvents are increasingly regulated. Due to the significant reduction of solvent content, environmental requirements can be met or production can be expanded. With selected solutions from the Jowatac® adhesive series, Jowat is making an important contribution to this.

The advantages of solvent-reduced adhesives

The upholstered furniture industry in particular benefits from the use of low-solvent adhesives with reduced emissions – after all, we are all in daily contact with sofas and beds.

  • Reduction of VOC emissions by up to 75% compared to conventional products
  • Reduced risk of fire with professional processing
