Adhesive with Hazard-Free Labeling for Automotive Interiors

Detmold, May 24, 2022—The monomer-reduced PUR hot melt adhesive Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 642.90 from the Jowat Green Adhesives series facilitates the lamination of challenging parts used in automotive interiors, based on the premise of optimized occupational safety.

The Green Adhesives product range of the adhesives manufacturer Jowat from Detmold provides an adhesive portfolio ideal for use in sustainable manufacturing processes. For Jowat, sustainability has several different aspects: Apart from resource conservation through the use of alternative raw materials and from active energy saving, the focus is also on occupational safety.

One-component moisture-curing PUR hot melt adhesives have been established in the automotive industry for several decades. Those products are characterized by outstanding bonding properties as well as resistance to hydrolysis, high temperature exposure or UV radiation. However, conventional PUR hot melt adhesives generally contain an excess of free monomer isocyanate of up to 5% and must therefore be marked with the GHS hazard pictogram and the corresponding H and P statements. Depending on the concentration, isocyanates have an irritating effect on the skin, mucosa, eyes and the respiratory system.

Jowat has therefore been developing monomer-reduced PUR hot melt adhesives which are not subject to hazard labeling requirements since the early 2000s already. The resulting product group Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR supplies different reactive PUR hot melt adhesives with hazard-free labeling which are already being used successfully in a wide range of applications.

Jowat’s newly developed Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 642.90 provides a versatile adhesive with hazard-free labeling for the lamination of automotive interior parts, which is tailor-made to meet the requirements in modern production. It can be processed with established application methods. However, its full strength is revealed when applied by spraying in the 3D lamination of automotive parts such as dashboards, center consoles, door and column trims, or retractable trunk covers and floors. In this application, it impresses with high initial strength, good creep resistance, very good resistance to plasticizers, and a performance on a par with its conventional alternatives.

The modern hot melt adhesive is not subject to hazard labeling requirements, due to its free monomer isocyanate content of less than 0.1 percent. An additional benefit is that employees will be able to process the adhesive without having to complete the mandatory training prescribed by law as of 2023.

By choosing Jowat Green Adhesives, employers can substantially contribute to a reduction in hazard potential and thereby to the protection of their employees—in line with a sustainable and responsible manufacturing process.
