Jowat awards prize for adhesive research in automotive series process

Dr Paulina Sierak has been presented with the Jowat Adhesive Research Award 2020.

Jowat honours first class research in the field of adhesives for the 16th time. The Jowat Adhesive Research Award ("Jowat-Klebstoff-Forschungspreis), which is presented every two years, went to Dr Paulina Sierak in 2020.

Every two years, the adhesives manufacturer from Detmold presents the Jowat Adhesives Research Award to honour outstanding solutions and approaches in the field of adhesive technology. This year, the coveted prize goes to Dr Paulina Sierak. She convinced the jury with her dissertation focused on the qualification of intelligent data analyses in automated adhesive bonding technology (German: “Qualifizierung intelligenter Datenanalysen in der automatisierten Klebtechnik”).

In her research work, Dr Sierak evaluated and assessed the potential of intelligent data analysing methods for use in automotive processes. The focus was on three areas: a process-accompanying prognosis of the bonding quality as well as the possible process optimisation through the earliest possible identification of error causes; the adjustment of process parameters; and a predictable maintenance of relevant plant technology.

The jury recognised Dr Sierak's work as a substantial gain in scientific knowledge of high practical relevance. According to the jury's assessment, the knowledge gained on the use of modern machine learning and artificial intelligence methods in adhesive bonding manufacturing processes opens up new possibilities for process optimisation and sustainable quality assurance.

After graduating from high school in Augsburg, the award winner studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich, specialising in aeronautical engineering and fibre composite technology. At the University of Valencia in Spain, she extended her expertise in the degree program “European Industrial Management”. Dr Sierak completed both her diploma thesis and her doctoral dissertation within the framework of her work at BMW AG in Munich, where she is now a specialist team leader responsible for assembly process planning. Her doctorate was supervised by the Chair of Materials and Joining Technology at the University of Paderborn under Professor Dr Gerson Meschut and the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

The Jowat Adhesive Research Award was presented on 15 December 2020 via video conference.
