Menzel: When taking a look at the huge range of adhesives available, it becomes evident very soon that the number and type of raw materials from which the adhesives are formulated must be almost unlimited. Reineke: Since the use of birch tar, which probably already served as bonding material for the Neanderthal man, a lot has happened. We distinguish between the raw materials first of all by their origin: natural raw materials like carbohydrates, proteins, rosins, lignin - and synthesised raw materials mainly derived from crude oil: for instance polymers, resins, waxes, additives. Each raw material as an ingredient of the final adhesive formulation makes its very specific contribution to the performance capacity of the adhesive. Menzel: The raw materials to manufacture adhesives are in many cases under heavy competition on the markets. How do you proceed so that the Jowat production sites are provided with an adequate raw material stock? Global Adhesives are raw materials for innovation, and adhesive raw materials are equally the building blocks to promote higher efficiency and to create new products. These building blocks are purchased in volumes ranging from kilograms to thousands of tons, and this is happening everywhere around the globe. Talking to the editor of the Progress Magazine, Thomas Reineke, Manager of the Department Raw Materials Purchasing, describes how Jowat is purchasing raw materials - strategically, on a global scale, and in a cooperative process. 19 Think in alternatives Raw material purchasing is a complex global venture
