15 Paper | Packaging Industry Bonding on the barrier layer to avoid contamination with mineral oil The paper industry is probably the sector where recycling has been implemented to the greatest possible extent. Global commerce with this sought-after raw material is flourishing. The use of waste paper is a win-win situation: It helps to protect the environment and it provides com- mercial advantages to numerous businesses active in the close-loop of manufacturing and recycling. However, this product received public criticism in the recent past. German inspection authorities detected harmful substances in food packaging materials made of recycled paper. The focus was on the migration of mineral oils. Talking to the editor of the Progress magazine, Manfred Kubo, Product Management Director for the Paper and Packaging sector at Jowat SE, describes the possibilities how harmful substances like mineral oil can migrate from waste paper into food, and how innovative adhesives and “thinking differently” can help to avoid such scenarios in the future.
