17 applications when bonding cardboards and folding boxes, we also provide lamination adhesives for the manufacture of packaging materials that are finished with a barrier foil. Editor: Does this only concern the migration of harmful substances? Kubo: Clearly, the migration of harmful substances should be prevented in general. There are however, food products with a higher risk potential than others, due to their particular dry or greasy nature. These products should be additionally protected by an inner coating on the packaging. The best examples of such products are cereals, noodles, tea (loose or in bags) and chocolate. Large supermarket chains are putting pressure particularly on the manufac- turers of these products to modify the packaging. Sugar, rice, flour, potato products and baby milk powder are the products that will follow, even in the non-food sector, e.g. manufacturers of coffee filters, consider to make a change. Editor: Let us focus on cardboards with barrier foils and the challenges they represent for the process of bonding. Kubo: Quite frankly, we are fully prepared. We have been offering certified food-safe adhesives for a long time now. Bonding and lamination of, with and on foils are commonapplicationsconductedbymanyofourcustomersin different sectors and well known to us. Particularly in the field of closing cartons with barrier coatings some trendsetting requirements evolved to which our adhesive specialists and application engineers had to pay special attention. In the process of determining the best adhesive system, if necessary enhanced with additional proper- ties, we conducted several trial runs in collaboration with our customers using different adhesives in both fields - closing of cartons and manufacturing of folding boxes. Editor: What is so special about these applications, for instance the closing of a cereal box as it can be purchased in any supermarket? Kubo: Excellent wetting properties of the adhesive on these surfaces with barrier function are crucial for bon- ding the side seams, and the top and bottom flaps. When the packaging material manufacturer supplies the printed folding boxes, the side seam is already bonded. The packer than erects the flat boxes and fills them. The top and bottom flaps are folded and usually bonded with a hot melt adhesive. Frequently, the filled boxes are repacked in a second step into corrugated cartons – and all of this is done in line. Quality tests in the packaging industry are very demanding. For instance, when the box is opened after a storage test An inner coating of the packaging should additionally protect certain food products such as cereals, which have a higher potential hazard due to their particular consistency.
