Wood | Furniture | Construction Industry The most important function is to promote and improve adhesion When applying a primer on the surface of a substrate, the goal is to improve the adhesion properties. Primers are specialised products that are used when other pretreatments fail to show the desired result, are not durable enough or cannot be implemented in existing industrial bonding and coating processes. In bonding, primers improve the adhesive characteristics of the surface. In contrast to some other pretreatment methods, the primer conserves these improved adhesive properties over a long period. This means that the actual bonding process can take place months or even years after the primer application. The majo- rity of plastic edgebands, for instance, are already primed by the producer and not at the point of use at the furniture factory. Additionally, many primers are suitable to be used with different types of adhesives (at least with those inten- ded for the corresponding application). As a result, the manufacturer benefits from clearly simplified, safer, more sta- ble and reproducible processes that in- crease the efficiency. In coating and printing, primers also facilitate a good adhesion to the sub- strate surface. These primers must exhibit excellent general printing and lacquering properties, compatibility with many standard printing inks and coatings, and in addition, they must provide a smooth and even print im- pression. On occasion, primers also couple up with other pretreatment methods. Difficult to treat materials, like polypropylene for instance, require an additional surface activation by flame, corona or plasma prior to the applica- tion of the primer. The specific primer for this substrate is then able to wet the surface adequately and to build up the necessary adhesive strength. In some other cases, adding a special crosslin- king component to the primer, can form chemical linkages with the surface of a substrate and significantly increase the resistance to water and other media 08 Requirements to the joining technology of bonding and to surface finishing are constantly growing. Diversity and individualisation are in demand. More and more frequently, composites are produced with materials which require a specific treatment prior to bonding or lacquering. To achieve an optimal and durable adhesive performance with this kind of materials, the application of a special adhesion promoter (also referred to as primer) is often the most suitable – and in many cases the only – solution. Jowat SE has met these demanding requirements successfully for many years and is renowned as market and innovation leader in this domain. Primer – Special expertise in bonding and surface finishing.
