20 on these results when it comes to de- veloping products with specific charac- teristics, like special requirements for environmental compatibility. Another important area of activity – from an ad- hesive technological point of view, as well as regarding occupational safety – is the analysis of the degree of re- action and residual monomer content in our reactive adhesive technologies. Another activity of growing importance in our daily work is the measurement and simulation of emissions. Material testing is quite similar. Just consider the numerous new materi- als to be bonded: car parts of carbon, compound textiles made of mem- branes and different plastic layers, or wood-plastic compound materials. The team employs modern thermoan- alytical and rheological measurement methods to analyse the properties of the processed adhesives and the way they influence the bonding behaviour. Editor: Therefore, the department provides services for Jowat’s inter- nal research community. However, your commitment goes far beyond the Jowat world. Henneken: As head of the depart- ment, my responsibilities include the many aspects of research coopera- tion: from the development of ideas for funded projects, through the entire ap- plication process, to project manage- ment. I also participate as a member and bonding expert in different project teams of other companies, and I am the contact person for cooperation with researching institutions. For in- stance, I represent Jowat at the “Ge- meinschaftsausschuss Klebtechnik” (GAK, a German Joint Committee on Adhesion Technology). The GAK is an initiative of various non-profit research associations for cross-industry and interdisciplinary evaluation of ideas for research projects within the frame- work of the IGF (“Industrielle Gemein- schaftsforschung,” Industrial Collec- tive Research) under the umbrella of AiF (“Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen,” the Ger- man Federation of Industrial Research Associations). In addition, we are ac- tive in different cooperation networks of the ZIM (“Zentrales Innovationspro- gramm Mittelstand,” Central Innova- tion Programme for SMEs). These re- search networks form a link between basic research and the economical implementation of new technologies to maintain and strengthen the competi- tiveness of medium-sized enterprises. These networks are supported with public funds by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and En- ergy. Editor: This makes Jowat extremely agile with regard to research and de- velopment. What are the benefits for the enterprise? Henneken: The primary objective of the research services is to increase the innovation rate at Jowat, as well as to organise cooperation projects more efficiently and further expansion. We participate in different research activities and cooperate with public in- stitutions and related interest groups. Our goal is to develop new, innovative adhesives and to bring them onto the market faster. These activities are not only supported by grants, but also by external resources, research results and stakeholders. Within the framework of its Corporate Social Responsibility, Jowat is com- mitted to also support researches of global relevance – from basic scientific research and the use of environmen- tally compatible, sustainable raw ma- terials in adhesive formulations, to en- ergy-saving application technologies. The position of Jowat as “Your Partner in Bonding” also refers to partners in research and development, in politics and relevant associations. We are al- ways also a part of the community. Editor: Does it mean that this form of commitment is also supported by the government and profitable for Jowat? Henneken: We make no secret of it. The operational objectives and strate- gies of the Research Services are
