09 Traditional and modern at the same time: EVA hot melt adhesives At the start of the 1960s, the introduc- tion of the first adhesives based on EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) revolutionised the furniture industry. EVA adhesives were characterised by a wide range of adhesion and could be used to bond almost any type of edgebands. Fast setting times facilitated immediate downline processing and significantly increased productivity. This made the serial manufacture of modular furni- ture for the first time economically vi- able. Today, hot melt adhesives are still successfully used in edgeband- ing. Due to continuously developed and optimised formulations, Jowat hot melt adhesives are perfectly adapted to any edgebanding application and provide the most appropriate process solution for reactivation methods as well as for conventional direct bonding. The all-rounders: PO hot melt adhesives Especially in applications that require an increased heat resistance, for in- stance in the manufacture of kitchen furniture, traditional EVA hot melts are being replaced with hot melt adhesives based on PO (polyolefin). PO hot melts are characterised by a wide range of adhesion, high heat resistance (up to approx. 120 °C) and good elasticity at low temperatures. In addition, PO hot melts are very versatile due to the growing variety of suitable PO poly- mers, which broadens the range of tailor-made formulations. An essential benefit for processors is that the con- version from EVA to PO hot melt ad- hesives does not require any modifica- tions to the existing application unit. edgebandingModern hot melt adhesives for highest requirements
