Bonding process analyses
Hardly any other industry is exposed to such high dynamics as the food and consumer goods industry. Adhesive applications must face a frequent change of substrates, formats and finishes of packaging, which still work properly. That's why Jowat's adhesive change process starts with a deep understanding of the application. An exact analysis of the already implemented or planned future adhesive processes, the substrates used and plant technology are in the focus. In preliminary discussions, the individual core requirements of the users are determined, at which later qualification tests of the adhesives are aligned. This is followed by intensive consultation on the entire process sequence of an adhesive conversion or introduction. For this purpose, more than 30 adhesives experts are working for Jowat in the packaging environment in Germany alone. An indication of the value that the company from Detmold give to a close customer relationship and high service quality.
Once the processes and core requirements of the users have been analyzed, individual qualification tests are developed. For this purpose, Jowat determines and compares the technical data of several products from its own portfolio in most cases, in order to make an adhesive selection that is optimally matched to the requirements of the user. With adhesives, pattern adhesives and substrates currently in use, as well as other Jowat adhesive products, comparative test couplings are being carried out in state-of-the-art laboratories and on equipment of the adhesive manufacturer in order to identify optimization potential. A classic qualification test involves the adhesion test, which ensures that the new adhesive has good or even better adhesion than the product previously used. In addition, depending on the user's questions, setting speed, heat resistance, cold adhesion or potential savings in adhesive application quantities can be evaluated. Food safety is of particular importance to Jowat, and Jowat, for example, also provides results from MOSH / MOAH testing - mineral oil migration testing - and NIAS analyzes - inadvertently introduced substances - for its products to users in the field of food safety To support compliance work. The adhesive manufacturer also competently answers individual questions through a corresponding specialist department. For these often complex qualification exams, Jowat has decades of experience and the necessary know-how to enable a straightforward conversion within a short space of time.
If none of the adhesives meets the individual requirements in the broad Jowat portfolio, adhesives can be developed together with users and partner companies. For this purpose, the Solution Partner Support department, in close cooperation with application equipment, machine and substrate manufacturers, supports trials and process developments on machines and applicators not only with adhesives, but also with know-how and user training to optimally accompany adhesive changes.
After the tests have shown that a Jowat product offers the desired optimization potential, tests can then be started in the user's production environment. Here, the adhesive manufacturer has the opportunity to carry out these test runs quickly and without major production interruptions. For example, when changing adhesives from other systems, such as EVA-based hot melt adhesives, to PO systems, Jowat supplies pre-melters to minimize machine downtime, making the conversion process more efficient. If the test runs are working optimally, the adhesive can be continued immediately after the test run and all systems can be gradually changed over. In addition to the technical advice Jowat also offers a free technical on-site service.
Experienced application engineers help to optimally retract machines and systems with the selected adhesive and thus achieve excellent results.
Particularly in the case of the frequent change of substrates and formats typical for the food industry, changes in the desired adhesive quality can quickly occur. A re-examination of the bonding processes and conditions, from the equipment to the adhesive, is therefore very important in order to identify and correct the actual causes of insufficient or faulty bonding. Again, Jowat provides assistance through production process controls and accurate error analysis. Here, customer-specific questions are specifically reviewed. Often the cause is quickly found because the material of a newly used substrate has different adhesive properties than the previous one. However, the adhesives used are also analyzed again in order to rule out a possible source of error. To this end, Jowat has prepared sample samples of every product in order to be able to carry out comparative bonding and testing at all times. The stated goal of the adhesive specialist is to support users throughout the process chain, to develop tailor-made solutions and to offer perfect adhesive performance.
