Sustainable Packaging of Adhesives

The new FFS packaging unit in Detmold.

Sustainability has many facets—as has the packaging of adhesives. To make sure that the packaging meets the enterprise’s sustainability ambitions, Jowat is now striking a new path in Detmold.

Jowat is therefore now using a so-called FFS (form, fill, seal) packaging unit supplied by Haver & Boecker OHG at its manufacturing location in Detmold also. The same packaging technology has already been in use at Jowat’s site in High Point (USA) for several years already.

A continuous tubular PE foil is shaped by the FFS machine into bags, which are then filled gently and safely with the product. The machine then fully automatically seals the bags by welding. The change to the new packaging is done progressively. The first product will be Jowat-Toptherm® 851.10, the powerful hot melt adhesives in pastille form for the bonding of cases, trays and folding boxes.

Jowat uses a foil that is already made from 30% recycled material. The new foil significantly reduces the consumption of raw materials and contributes to a circular economy. We have chosen a foil that meets our goal of a packaging that can be recycled 100% and conserves resources.

The new, recyclable foil bags have several impressive benefits compared to the previous packaging solution:

  • The continuous tubular film facilitates variable bag sizes. Therefore, almost 100% of the PE foil is used.
  • Improved storage and transport characteristics.
  • Improved protection of the product against moisture.
  • The label and the bag are made of the same material and can be recycled together.
