Sander: It may sound like a matter of course, but bonding is naturally an area where clarity is of the utmost importance. The adhesive may not form spiderwebs that could soil the machines respectively the transport belts which would then impair the perfect appearance of the packs. The adhesive should be transparent and practically invisible, bubbles or trapped air are absolutely undesirable. An integrated protection against UV damage must prevent yellowing of the bondline. Even if clear folding packaging units are often shipped in an additional transport package, their storage and global shipping conditions must ensure that the package remains resistant to thermal and mechanical stress, and that in consequence the excellent presentation of the product at the final place of display is not jeopardized. Menzel: These packages can only be described in super- latives. Sander: This applies equally for another kind of transparent packaging, for instance window patching. In this application, a clear view is the main factor, sometimes serving the interest of the customer – who may visualize the pasta he or she wants to serve, but forgot what it’s called – and recognizes it at first glance. Consumers want to see what they buy. Menzel: Window bonding creates a clear view and protection, which means added value and matches the Jowat Philosophy very well: to support customers in profiting from the added value aspects of their products. Sander: The bonding of windows in packages is a very good example. If you imagine a window created not only by a laminated cover over a window-shaped cut-out of a carton, but as total surface lamination, we get to the lamination process with foils. These may be used for inside or outside laminated covers, and then can function not only as windows but also as barriers. Depending on the surface the foil is covering, a migration from inside to outside can be prevented, and vice versa. Menzel: That’s a good example for this edition of the customer magazine under the heading “Think differently“. Sander: Jowat perceives itself as the partner in bonding who wants to also “think differently“. We respond actively to market trends and support new application ideas with activities in our development departments. This may be anywhere around the globe, may concern new processing technologies or demand formulations with new raw materials. “Think differently“ needs to be interpreted also as: understanding and bonding with cross-industrial and intercultural competence. 18 Clear folding boxes often exhibit very diverse surface properties and high restoring forces which result in superior demands on the bonding technology. Apart from this, not only the clear packaging should be transparent but also the adhesive, to allow an unimpaired view of the content.
