20 Reineke: The purchasing of raw materials for the very extensive range of Jowat products is a complex global activity. To have reliable suppliers for the ingredients used in the formulation of the products, which are constantly in a manufacturing process, is most crucial. Beyond this, it is also important to establish alternatives for the raw materials that can be used in the production of the Jowat adhesives. This is an ongoing interactive process together with the R&D department. We collect innovative raw materials offered by suppliers, or track down specific products by our raw materials scouts and R&D conducts tests and – if successful – enter our raw materials list. This way, we ensure uninterrupted supplies beyond the quality already mentioned. The raw materials availability is ensured for the current production of adhesives by a combination of stock, supply capacity, and of “thinking differently“, which means the flexibility resulting from the cooperation of purchasing and development departments, in the interest of for example creating alternative formulations. The framework for action is here set by the focus on quality and cost. Menzel: The technology of bonding has not reached the end of its tether by far. There is still lots of potential for rationalisation and scope to develop new, innovative products. How do you as manufacturer get innovative raw materials for new adhesive formulations in adequate quality and volumes to be able to qualify these for the industrial production? Reineke: We get many impulses here also from our suppliers. Due to our very active in-house R&D work, we are in the lucky position to be often selected first by our suppliers to evaluate new raw materials. We are extremely proud of this and take good care of this partnership. Menzel: No raw materials scout of Jowat ventures into primeval forests to tap trees in the search for the rosin of the future? Reineke: No, that’s not the way this works, but we do have colleagues with specific scouting jobs. Their jungles are the supplier markets, for example in Asia. In this region they focus on identifying alternative and innovative raw materials producers who can meet the high quality standards of Jowat. Menzel: … and these standards would be? Reineke: Those that apply to us just like they do for all industries: reliable product quality, supply capacity, pricing appropriate for the markets. But one of our demands is
