at low temperature (4 °C), a complete fibre tear should be ensured in the bonded area - adhesion failure is unaccepta- ble. The shelf life may be 12 months or even longer. An uninterrupted, trouble-free operation of the packaging line is also important from an economical point of view. To avoid expensive and unproductive maintenance and cleaning work, the hot melt adhesive should be applicable with little or no stringing. Additionally, the adhesive should not block, especially when vacuum feeding systems are used to transport the granules to the melting unit. A good adhesion and fast setting under low pressure are also very important. In other words, an adhesive is required that exhibits a wide adhesion spectrum, fast setting properties and a low processing temperature, as well as a tack-free surface to assure smooth transport through the vacuum feeding sys- tem. Insufficient adhesion properties will lead to failures under cold storage conditions - if the setting time is not fast enough, the initial strength is not able to withstand the resetting forces of the carton flaps at high output rates or short pressing times and will lead to slower and inefficient processes. Particularly for these conditions, we have developed new adhesives. They are specialists in bonding food packa- ging materials from various cardboard manufacturers, they adhere to functional barrier layers and handle the demanding conditions of high-speed packaging processes.
