For decades, bonding edgebands to wood-based boards has been an es- tablished practice in the manufacture of furniture. Over the years, progress in engineering and processing technolo- gy, as well as a growing diversity of pro- cessed materials from different manu- facturers, and especially the demand for visually more appealing furniture have placed higher demands on ad- hesives and adhesive technology. The quality of edgebanding was brought to the next level by the introduction of re- activation methods like laser or plasma technology, where the substrates are joined by using energy to reactivate a previously applied functional layer on the reverse of the edgeband – the “zero-bondline” was born. These high demands on quality could only be met with innovative adhesive systems. 08 In superior furniture manufacturing, the value of the final product is increasingly deter- mined by the quality of the edge finishing. Adhesives have to provide a wide range of adhesion, high heat resistance and durability, and deliver a visually appealing furniture piece. Modern hot melt adhesives fulfil all these requirements and are renowned for ensuring reliable processes in edgebanding. Reactive PUR hot melts meet even the highest demands.
